A Bracelet with a Story to Tell™
Alaskan Winter Solstice Bracelet Inspiration: Most people know that Alaska spends a lot of time in the dark during the winter. What surprises people is that we get daylight, if you’re below the Arctic Circle. It’s not much, but we do have light.
Here at our house, we will have 5 hours and 14 minutes and 16 seconds of light on Winter Solstice. Yes, we count the seconds!
Obviously, the farther north you go, the less hours of daylight you’ll see, and the farther south you go, the more hours of daylight you’ll see. It’s not always dark all the time!
In the winter, the earth is tilted about 23.5 degrees. Because we’re tilted away from the sun, we get less daylight. Also, we’re extremely north on the planet.
Because our house sits in an area between two mountain ranges, starting the week of Thanksgiving, the sun doesn’t rise above the ridges of the Chugach Mountains in front of our house. We get daylight, but we don’t get direct sunlight.
The sun won’t peek over a ridge until the last week of January, at the earliest, or even later depending on the weather. It’s been the third week of February several years back before we saw the sun because of clouds and snow. It only pops over for a short minute at first, so when we see it, we shout with excitement and soak it in!
Don’t think that we all sit at home and wait on summer to return. No! We are busy outside because winter is the best time in Alaska!
What is there to do? Well, a lot. You can ice fish, sled, ski, snowmachine, fat bike, chase the northern lights (or just lights as locals calls them), attend Fur Rondy, the opening of the Iditarod, attend the opening events for the Iron Dog Race, check out the ice carvings, hop on the winter train, soak in the hot springs, and so much more!
I used the same brass spacers in between each bead as I did on the Summer Solstice bracelet. The gold color and the brass spacers represent the short, but bright beams, of sunlight that we do get in our gorgeous state!
This is a stretch bracelet to fit most wrists or ankles. Need a special size? We can customize it just for you.
