The Juneau Bracelet Inspiration: Juneau is Alaska’s state capital. In 1900, the US Congress ordered that our capital be moved from Sitka to Juneau. In 1906, that move took place, and Juneau has been our capital ever since.
Why did Congress make that request? If you guessed the Gold Rush you guessed right!
Juneau has a population of just under 32,000. That’s a lot of people who live in a town that isn’t accessible by road.
That’s right, Juneau is the only state capital in North America that is not on the road system. You can fly in or you can take a boat, but you can’t drive your vehicle to Juneau. You can, however, drive your car onto the Alaska Marine Ferry, and then when you arrive in Juneau, drive right into town!
Juneau sits along the Gastineau Channel bordered by Mt. Douglas and Douglas Island.
There’s so much about Juneau to share from the towering mountains, to the islands, to the glaciers, to so many great small businesses to share.
I’ve not been yet, but it’s on my bucket list. I’ve heard some stories about flying into town.
Alaskan Inspiration: I made two bracelets to represent Juneau, and then I held a contest and asked everyone to tell me which they liked better. By overwhelming majority, the bracelet you’re seeing was the winner. Shocked the socks off of me!
The iconic photo that I shared with you taken high above Juneau from Mount Juneau shows exactly what I described of Douglas Island, Gastineau Channel, and Mount Juneau.
The blue Lapis Lazuli gemstone beads represent the water in Gastineau Channel. The green recycled glass represents all of the trees that cover the islands and mountains around Juneau. The silver spacers represent cruise boats in docked in town.
